Save Canada's Experimental Lakes Area 
I suggest that freshwater scientists and Canadians generally are seriously underestimating the problem that closure of the ELA represents. This closure is not a cost-saving measure, nor is it blind stupidity.
Surely it must be obvious by now that the Harper Government is ideologically indisposed to reality. Judging from its many past actions of a similar nature, this government believes that it can simply manufacture a variety of often contradictory alternate realities to suit whatever it believes its interests of the moment may be.
Political pressure may force it to back down on the ELA, but I doubt it. The ELA is the most powerful instrument we have to reveal the truth on all sorts of environmental issues that the Harper Government deeply wants to ignore. Closing it is a strategic move to eliminate an opponent deadly to the present federal government’s purposes.
Our most urgent need at the moment is to get the ELA into safe hands, out of reach of opponents with similar ideologies. Leaving it in the hands of this federal government keeps it at perpetual risk of further “disciplinary measures.” Ultimately, it needs to be run by an independent or arm’s-length body supported by a variety of interests, so that no one of them can shut the place down on their own.
As with the Census and other changes, the Harper government also wants to eliminate baseline information that would allow scientists and others to measure change. It’s easy to say things are getting better when there are no accurate comparisons available. So this is ultimately about control and yet another denial of opportunity for discussion and rational debate.

It was with shock & real sadness that I was informed of the imminent closure of the Experimental Lakes Area in Northwestern Ontario. This was the scientific area that taught the world that phosphates in our water caused a major increase in algal growth in the fresh water of the world. This was accomplished by whole ecosystem manipulation & has resulted lessons in how to save fresh water throughout the world. A dollar value of this information is worth multi billions of dollars to the governments of the world.
Subsequently, this group of scientists has determined the life cycle of mercury in the environment, which has led to major changes in the understanding of the effects of hydro dams on mercury ecology & poisoning.
These are just 2 of the many major successes, this group of scientists at the Experimental Lakes Area have made.
I understand that your Government feels it is short of funds for this & many other urgent needs of Canada. There is only one answer that will result in developing or producing the needs of Canadians. It is time to recognize that Canadians want our scientists adequately supported to do world class science. It is time for your government to maintain & improve our water & sewer infra structure & to repair our bridges so that people are not killed as they crumble. It is time for our Government to adequately fund our schools & Universities. Our environmental laws need to be enhanced not be emasculated. The senior government must supply the provinces & municipalities adequate funding for them to do their job.
Yes, your revenues are inadequate to do all these jobs in spite of the facts that these initiatives would put many to work & would get more people paying taxes. To supply the money you need, your government should be stopping all the foolish talk of reducing taxes. The only result of that, is to give you an excuse to do nothing.
Now is the time for you to start raising taxes at all levels but especially in the high income groups. We Canadians love our country & want to make it better. We do not want to watch you let everything fall apart & expect the middle class to run garage sales, barbecues & charity fundraisers to fund the many necessities you are not supporting in our communities.
